    Why Capturing the Construction Site Is Only the Beginning

    For years, the conversation around drones in commercial construction has largely focused on what drones can capture.

    High-resolution photographs. Video. Orthomosaics. 3D models. Point clouds. Digital surface and terrain models.

    All of those deliverables can provide tremendous value.

    But as drone technology becomes more deeply integrated into construction workflows, a more important question is emerging:

    What can we actually learn from all of this data?

    That represents the next evolution of drones in commercial construction.

    It is the transition from drone data collection to construction intelligence.

    A drone can collect an extraordinary amount of information about a construction site in a relatively short period of time.

    But capturing data is only the beginning.

    The real opportunity develops when construction teams begin using that information as part of a repeatable intelligence workflow:

    Each step adds another level of value.

    CAPTURE
    Create an accurate and repeatable visual record of current site conditions.

    COMPARE
    Evaluate current conditions against previous flights, plans, designs or other project information.

    QUANTIFY
    Where appropriate, use photogrammetry, point clouds, terrain models and other data to measure distances, areas, elevations, volumes and physical changes.

    VALIDATE
    Compare what is visible or measurable in the field against what was expected to occur.

    DECIDE
    Give the project team better information to determine what deserves attention and what action—or additional investigation—may be appropriate.

    The drone is therefore not the intelligence.

    It is the data acquisition layer that makes the intelligence possible.


    The Power of Asking: “What Changed?”

    Consider something as straightforward as a construction orthomosaic.

    One orthomosaic provides a highly detailed, geometrically corrected view of the project at a particular point in time.

    That’s useful.

    But capture that same site consistently—using comparable flight parameters and a regular cadence—and something much more valuable begins to happen.

    You create a visual history of the project.

    Now the team can compare consecutive datasets and start asking:

    What changed?

    That seemingly simple question can reveal changes involving:

    • Earthwork and grading
    • Utility trenching and backfill
    • Foundations and structural work
    • Material staging and laydown areas
    • Stockpile locations and quantities
    • Equipment positioning
    • Site access and haul routes
    • Temporary facilities
    • Drainage and ponding
    • Traffic control
    • Perimeter fencing and security
    • Overall site organization and progress

    Instead of depending solely on someone’s recollection of what the site looked like several weeks earlier, the team has an objective visual record.

    And that can change the quality of the conversation.


    Adding AI-Assisted Construction Intelligence

    This is where artificial intelligence introduces another interesting layer.

    A large commercial construction project can contain thousands of visual changes between consecutive drone missions.

    A human can certainly compare two datasets.

    The challenge is identifying which changes actually deserve attention.

    AI-assisted analysis can help evaluate consecutive datasets and identify observable differences that might otherwise require considerable time to find manually.

    The questions become increasingly useful:

    What changed?

    How much changed?

    Is what we’re seeing consistent with what was expected?

    What deserves a closer look?

    Why might it matter?

    What should the project team ask next?

    That is very different from simply generating another drone report.

    It begins turning visual documentation into construction intelligence.


    AI Doesn’t Replace Construction Expertise

    There’s an important distinction here.

    AI should not be determining whether a construction project is being managed correctly.

    Nor should drone technology replace the expertise of project managers, superintendents, engineers, surveyors or other construction professionals.

    Instead, think of AI-assisted analysis as another set of eyes.

    It can help professionals work through large amounts of visual information more efficiently and identify areas that may warrant additional investigation.

    The technology identifies the observation.

    Experienced construction professionals provide the context.

    That distinction is critical.


    Connecting Drone Intelligence to the Project Schedule

    The next logical step is connecting observed field conditions with other sources of project information.

    One of the most interesting opportunities is the project schedule.

    Suppose a particular area was scheduled for grading during the previous month.

    What does the visual record show?

    If underground utility installation was scheduled to advance through a particular section of the site, is that progression visible?

    If structural work was expected to move into another portion of the project, does the captured data appear consistent with that sequence?

    Drone imagery alone should not be used to declare that a project is ahead or behind schedule.

    But when visual observations are combined with scheduling information, they can provide project teams with another valuable source of context.

    And that is where construction intelligence becomes much more powerful.


    Going Deeper: Quantifying Change

    Not every construction question can be answered from imagery alone.

    That’s why different forms of drone data serve different purposes.

    Progress photographs and video are excellent for documentation.

    Orthomosaics provide spatial context across the entire project.

    Digital surface models and digital terrain models introduce elevation information.

    Point clouds provide detailed three-dimensional representations of site conditions.

    Those datasets can support deeper analysis involving:

    Stockpile volumes.

    Cut-and-fill conditions.

    Elevation changes.

    Distances and areas.

    Site-plan comparisons.

    Physical progress over time.

    The objective isn’t to produce every possible drone deliverable.

    It’s to determine:

    What information does the construction team need to make the decision in front of them?

    Then capture and process the appropriate data to support it.


    Case Study: Seeing a Construction Project Month Over Month

    One of the ways we’ve been exploring this concept at Aerial Decisions is through recurring progress monitoring on an active multi-building commercial construction project.

    Each month, the site is captured again using a repeatable aerial workflow.

    Traditionally, those missions provide the project team with progress photographs, aerial imagery and an updated orthomosaic.

    But the historical datasets create another opportunity.

    Instead of looking only at the newest imagery, we can compare the current orthomosaic against the previous month’s capture.

    That allows us to examine visible changes in areas such as site logistics, material staging, structural progress, equipment locations, access routes and general construction activity.

    We can then apply AI-assisted analysis to help identify and organize those observable changes into a Construction Intelligence Report.

    The important distinction is that the report doesn’t attempt to tell the superintendent or project manager how to run the project.

    Instead, it helps answer:

    Here’s what appears to have changed.

    Here’s something you may want to look at more closely.

    And as additional datasets such as project schedules, terrain models or point clouds become available, the depth of that analysis can continue to increase.

    Progress Tracking

    Consistent aerial captures allow teams to visually compare physical progress across days, weeks or months and maintain a historical record throughout the project lifecycle.

    Stockpile and Quantity Monitoring

    Photogrammetric datasets can support volume calculations and help teams understand how material quantities change over time.

    Site Plan and Design Comparisons

    Drone data can be overlaid with plans or other design information to provide additional context between documented field conditions and intended layouts.

    Inspections and Documentation

    High-resolution aerial imagery can document difficult-to-access areas, provide historical evidence of conditions and help direct human attention toward areas that deserve closer inspection.

    The common denominator isn’t the drone.

    It’s better access to useful project information.


    Why This Matters to Owners and General Contractors

    Construction projects already generate enormous amounts of data.

    The problem is rarely a lack of information.

    The problem is turning that information into something people can use.

    For an owner, that may mean understanding project progress without visiting the site.

    For a project executive, it may mean seeing meaningful changes across a large project more quickly.

    For a project manager or superintendent, it may mean having an objective visual reference when discussing field conditions.

    For an engineer or surveyor, it may mean having another dataset available to support professional analysis.

    The value isn’t simply seeing more.

    What’s the difference between an orthomosaic, DTM and point cloud?

    An orthomosaic provides a geometrically corrected overhead image of the site.

    digital terrain model (DTM) represents ground elevations, typically with above-ground objects removed where processing permits.

    point cloud consists of millions of three-dimensional points representing captured surfaces and can support detailed measurement and spatial analysis.

    Each dataset answers different construction questions.

    Does construction drone intelligence replace a surveyor?

    No.

    Drone-derived data can be extremely useful to surveyors, engineers and construction professionals, but it should not be represented as replacing professional surveying services where licensed survey work is required.

    The better model is augmentation: giving qualified professionals additional, timely information.

    Does a construction company need a specific software platform to use drone intelligence?

    Not necessarily.

    The most effective approach is to determine how the construction team already works and deliver usable information into that environment whenever practical.

    The objective should be useful construction intelligence—not forcing the client into a particular drone platform.

    How often should a construction site be captured?

    That depends on the project and the decisions the data needs to support.

    Some projects benefit from weekly or bi-weekly capture, while others may be adequately documented monthly or at major construction milestones.

    Construction Drone Adoption Is Growing

    The Next Opportunity Is Turning Drone Data Into Construction Intelligence

    My Perspective

    I’ve spent a lot of time talking with General Contractors, Owners, engineers and public agencies about drones, and I’ve noticed a consistent pattern.

    Most people already understand the value of aerial photography and progress monitoring. What they’re often less familiar with is everything that can happen after the drone lands.

    That’s why the new drone-usage research from Associated Builders and Contractors caught my attention.

    Only about one-third of contractors surveyed are flying drones today. And among those who are, progress monitoring and marketing are far more common than some of the advanced mapping and data applications we’ve been discussing with our clients.

    To me, that’s not a negative.

    It’s an enormous opportunity.

    The next stage of construction drone adoption isn’t simply getting more drones onto jobsites. It’s making the data they collect easier to access, integrate and use to make better construction decisions.

    That’s where things get interesting.


    Construction Drones Have Entered the Mainstream — But We’re Still Early

    Associated Builders and Contractors released its first Drone Usage report in August 2026, based on a May survey of its contractor members.

    The headline number is significant:

    36.1% of responding contractors reported flying drones.

    Nearly 75% of the contractors surveyed work in commercial construction, making the findings particularly relevant to the projects and clients we work with every day. 

    DroneLife’s Jim Magill subsequently highlighted another remarkable finding: among respondents using drones, 97.1% identified DJI as their primary drone manufacturer, illustrating just how concentrated the industry’s current hardware environment has become. 

    But the statistic I find most interesting isn’t 97.1%.

    It’s 36.1%.

    Because that means almost two-thirds of the contractors surveyed aren’t flying drones yet.

    For a technology capable of collecting so much useful project information, there’s still substantial room to grow.


    What Are Construction Companies Actually Doing With Drones?

    ABC’s findings give us a fascinating picture of current adoption.

    Among contractors using drones:

    Inspections and mapping50.0%

    There’s an important story hiding inside those numbers.

    Construction has clearly embraced the visual value of drones.

    Progress photos? Absolutely.

    Marketing videos? Absolutely.

    But only half of drone users reported using drones for inspections and mapping.

    That’s where I believe the next major growth opportunity exists.


    The Next Evolution: From Pictures to Data

    A drone photograph tells you what a project looks like.

    A properly captured and processed drone dataset can potentially tell you much more.

    Depending on the project, drone data can support:

    • Orthomosaic mapping
    • Progress comparisons
    • Stockpile and volume analysis
    • 3D models
    • Point clouds
    • Digital surface and terrain models
    • Site logistics
    • Inspection documentation
    • GIS workflows
    • CAD and engineering workflows
    • Executive reporting

    That’s the transition we’re focused on at Aerial Decisions:

    From drone imagery to construction intelligence.

    The aircraft captures reality.

    Photogrammetry and other technologies transform that capture into data.

    Construction and engineering platforms make the information accessible.

    And ultimately, people use that information to make decisions.


    So What’s Holding Adoption Back?

    ABC’s findings are particularly revealing here.

    Among respondents, the leading challenges to adopting drone technology included regulatory and compliance issues at 53.5%, training and staffing at 43.4%, and limited use cases at 37.4%

    DroneLife’s coverage also reports 16.2% cited difficulty integrating drones into existing workflows

    I think those numbers deserve attention.

    The challenge isn’t simply convincing contractors that drones work.

    It’s making drones easy to operationalize.


    Why Outsourcing Can Make Sense for General Contractors

    This is also why I believe many contractors should evaluate whether building an internal drone department is actually necessary.

    The ABC survey does not conclude that outsourcing is preferable; that’s my interpretation of the barriers it identified.

    Think about what an internal commercial drone program can require:

    FAA-qualified pilots, ongoing training, regulatory compliance, aircraft management, insurance, mission planning, specialized mapping expertise, data processing, software subscriptions, quality control and someone who understands how to deliver the resulting information into construction workflows.

    And then there’s utilization.

    If your team only needs specialized mapping at certain projects or milestones, maintaining all of those capabilities internally may not always make economic sense.

    A qualified drone service provider can allow a contractor to access specialized pilots, aircraft, sensors, mapping capabilities and processing expertise when the project requires them.

    The GC can focus on construction.

    The drone provider can focus on collecting and transforming the data.


    The Bigger Opportunity Is Integration

    This is where I believe our industry needs to focus next.

    Construction teams don’t need another isolated drone platform.

    They need drone information that can flow into the environments they’re already using.

    That could mean:

    Procore for project management.

    Civil 3D for civil engineering.

    ArcGIS for geospatial information.

    Bluebeam for project documentation and markups.

    Or other CAD, BIM, GIS and construction-management environments.

    The objective shouldn’t be to force everyone on a project to become a drone-data expert.

    It should be to make the information easy for each stakeholder to consume in the tools they already understand.


    Mapping May Be the Biggest Untapped Opportunity

    The fact that only 50% of drone-using respondents reported inspections and mapping particularly stands out to me. 

    We’ve already seen what happens when a construction team moves beyond individual aerial photographs and sees an entire project represented as a measurable orthomosaic.

    The conversation changes.

    Now we can talk about:

    What changed?

    How much material moved?

    Where was this condition located?

    How does today’s site compare with last month?

    Can engineering use this dataset?

    That’s no longer drone photography.

    That’s project information.


    And AI Will Raise the Value Again

    There’s another layer developing quickly.

    Once construction teams create consistent, structured datasets over time, AI has something meaningful to analyze.

    Imagine combining recurring reality capture with previous site conditions, inspection observations, schedules and other project information.

    Instead of simply asking:

    “Show me this month’s drone photos.”

    We can begin asking:

    “What changed?”

    “What should I be paying attention to?”

    “Where are conditions inconsistent with the previous capture?”

    “What information should the project team review?”

    That is where I believe construction drone intelligence is headed.


    Mini Case Snapshot

    Project Type: Southern California municipal infrastructure project

    Starting Point: Drone imagery was initially valuable primarily for visual progress documentation.

    Next Step: Recurring mapping introduced orthomosaic data and a complete measurable view of project conditions.

    Opportunity: Make those datasets useful across existing GIS, engineering and project-management workflows rather than requiring stakeholders to work inside a dedicated drone environment.

    Takeaway: The greater value wasn’t simply capturing more images. It was making the captured information more useful to more people.


    What About the DJI Question?

    The ABC survey’s 97.1% DJI figure deserves its own conversation, particularly given the changing U.S. regulatory environment. 

    For contractors, however, I think there’s a broader strategic lesson.

    Don’t build your construction-data strategy around one aircraft manufacturer.

    Hardware will change.

    Regulations will change.

    Software will change.

    The valuable asset is the project’s historical information and the intelligence derived from it.

    Drone mapping can provide accurate, repeatable site information for progress monitoring, documentation, volume analysis, visualization and other construction applications.

    It is important, however, to distinguish those applications from licensed professional surveying.

    Drone mapping services are not intended to replace licensed land surveying, legal boundary determination or engineering-grade deliverables where professional licensure or certification is required.

    We believe the next opportunity is moving beyond imagery toward structured drone data that integrates with existing construction, engineering and GIS workflows and ultimately supports better project decisions.


    Executive Takeaway: We’re Only Getting Started

    I don’t look at a 36% adoption rate and see a technology struggling for acceptance.

    I see a technology that has already proven its value—and an industry with enormous room to expand how that technology is used.

    The first chapter was putting cameras in the sky.

    The next chapter is turning what those cameras capture into usable construction intelligence.

    That means better mapping.

    Better integrations.

    Open, portable data.

    Simpler workflows.

    And increasingly, AI that helps construction professionals understand what’s changing across their projects.

    The winners won’t necessarily be the construction companies flying the most drones.

    They’ll be the companies making the best decisions with the data those drones collect.

    Why Platform Independence May Matter More Than Ever

    My Perspective

    When I first saw the news that Procore was acquiring DroneDeploy, my initial reaction wasn’t concern. It was validation.

    For years, those of us working in construction drone technology have been making the case that aerial imagery, reality capture, mapping, and site data belong inside the broader construction technology workflow. A transaction of this magnitude sends a pretty strong signal that the industry agrees.

    But it also caused me to think about something we’ve been discussing extensively at Aerial Decisions: Who should ultimately control the construction intelligence created from that data?

    Our answer is simple.

    The client.

    What Is Drone Mapping?

    Imagine you’re putting together a jigsaw puzzle, but instead of individual pieces, you have photos taken from the sky. Drone mapping stitches these photos together to create a seamless, detailed picture of the land below. This is what we call an orthomosaic. It’s like a high-tech quilt made from aerial images, corrected for perspective and distortion, so everything lines up perfectly.

    Drone mapping isn’t just about making maps; it’s about precision and accuracy. Whether you’re in construction, agriculture, or environmental monitoring, a well-made map is like a crystal ball, revealing insights that help you make better decisions.

    What Are Orthomosaics, and Why Are They Important?

    These stitched-together images are incredibly accurate, allowing you to measure areas, calculate volumes, and even identify small changes over time. For example, in construction, orthomosaics help track progress and ensure everything is on track—literally and figuratively.

    How Are Drone Maps Created?

    Creating a drone map is like baking a cake. You need the right ingredients, tools, and a good recipe. The first ingredient is, of course, the drone. Most drones come with GPS systems that help them fly accurately and stay stable in the air. It’s like the autopilot on an airplane, ensuring a smooth ride. GPS alone, however, is like baking a cake without measuring the ingredients—it might look okay, but it won’t be precise.

    This is where additional tools come in. Drones equipped with RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) modules are game-changers. RTK acts like a kitchen scale, measuring everything down to the gram. It provides real-time corrections to the drone’s position, ensuring centimeter-level accuracy. But even RTK isn’t enough without Ground Control Points (GCPs). These are like the landmarks on your treasure map, anchoring your data to the real world.

    To make everything work together, you also need a GNSS receiver and, in most cases, access to an NTRIP (Networked Transport of RTCM via Internet Protocol) subscription. It’s a mouthful, I know, but think of NTRIP as your recipe’s secret ingredient—a little extra something that makes your map exceptionally accurate.

    RTK vs. PPK: What’s the Difference?

    RTK and PPK (Post-Processed Kinematic) are like two chefs with different cooking styles. RTK is all about instant results. It’s like cooking with a pressure cooker, delivering fast, accurate data corrections in real time. PPK, on the other hand, is more like slow cooking. You gather the data during your flight and process it later for even more refined accuracy.

    Both methods have their strengths. RTK is ideal for real-time applications, while PPK shines when you need the highest level of precision. The choice between the two depends on your project’s needs, much like choosing between quick weeknight meals and a gourmet weekend feast.

    A Word of Caution: Accuracy vs. Survey-Grade

    Here’s a crucial point for drone pilots and service providers: avoid claiming that your maps are “survey-grade” unless you’re a licensed surveyor. It’s like calling a home-cooked meal a Michelin-starred dish. While your maps might be highly accurate, using the term “survey-grade” can lead to legal trouble with government agencies and professional surveyors. Instead, focus on highlighting your maps’ precision and practical applications.
